Program Status
Updated: Nov. 1, 2004
Accepting applications
to begin in September 2005 (deadline for applications:
August 2, 2005). Registration available for U.S. residents
online at http://www.emich.edu/admissions/apply/index.html.
International students
note: application deadline for September 2005 is July 5, 2005.
Both programs are offered based on a unique
partnership between Eastern Michigan University's department
of HPHP in the College of Health and Human Services, its College of Technology
(composite and plastic materials), and the University of Michigan's
Orthotics and Prosthetics Center's (UMOPC) chief administrator
and certified practitioners.
Scheduled to accommodate working professionals
and full-time students, classes will be offered during evenings
and on occasional Saturdays. Fall (September 2005) scheduling
will be posted on the websites mentioned below which link
to EMU's HPHP homepage.
Effective July 4, 2004, the department of
HPERD was changed to the department of Health Promotion and Human Performance (HPHP) and resides within the College of Health and Human
Services. This change has had will have no effect on the content of either
graduate certificate program offered in Orthotics and Prosthetics.
Entrance Requirements
To be accepted into the program students
must have obtained a minimum cumulative grade point average
for their undergraduate degree of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale. Those
who meet this requirement but who have not taken certain undergraduate
courses listed on the websites including human anatomy, must
complete these courses before they can be formally admitted
into either Graduate Certificate Program. The only exception to
this is the equivalent of EMU's ACCT 240 (Accounting 240),
which must be taken before students enter their final semester.
Applicants who are deficient in no more
than three prerequisite courses may be granted provisional
acceptance to the program but only if these course are completed
concurrently with the initial certificate program courses
and with an advisor's permission. Upon completion of the prerequisite
courses, students will be formally admitted into the graduate
certificate program.
To obtain a Graduate Certificate in orthotics
or prosthetics, students must complete 31 credit hours with
a 3.0 ("B") average, which will take approximately 21 months to
complete. Details of the programs, instructors,
and updates are and will continue to be posted on the oandp.com
(EDUCATION, Developing Programs), and ncope.org
(Accredited Schools, EMU) websites, which link directly to
the HPHP homepage.
Reminder to Undergraduate Students
Undergraduate students in the States of
Michigan and Ohio who have completed 85 or more credit hours
with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75, and
who would like to learn more about the field of orthotics
and prosthetics as a profession are permitted to take SPMD
580 (Introduction to Orthotics and Prosthetics), and SPMD
581(Musculoskeletal Pathologies for Orthotics and Prosthetics),
which are currently offered only in the Fall semester.
Textbooks, Lab Fees, Tool Kits
Textbooks will be available for purchase
at the McKenny Student Union, EMU. Announcements regarding
additional lab fees for those courses that require workbench activities,
materials and tools will be provided on the appropriate course
outlines.
Opportunity for Research
Based on the number of research studies being conducted at any given time, students may be given the opportunity to become involved in those projects.
Accreditation
NCOPE will visit campus
for the purpose of obtaining accreditation during November, 2004. This will enable the University to obtain valuable
input from students concerning their impression(s) of the
program and address any issues NCOPE might have concerning
academic content of the program, methods of instruction, student
advising, record keeping, clinical affiliation sites, and
other administrative and facilitative issues.
Currently listed by NCOPE
as a "Developing Program," we are in the process
of completing the Self-Study Report required by NCOPE
and CAAHEP prior to the
accreditation visit.
Future Plan
Master's Degree in Orthotics AND Prosthetics
We have initiated the
internal review process to extend both Graduate Certificates
into a master's degree in orthotics and prosthetics. We are hopeful that the MSOP will be state approved some time in the year 2005. If the state approves the program, students currently registered in both Certificate Programs who wish to obtain a master's degree in orthotics and prosthetics will be given the opportunity to do so contingent upon a review of their proposed topic made by a thesis committee. The thesis committee will make the decision based on the merit of the proposed topic relative to its potential to make a significant contribution to the field.
